Dr. Mattox attended the University of Colorado where he received his bachelor of arts and doctor of medicine degree. Following internship at Hartford Hospital, he did his residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Illinois Research and Educational Hospital in Chicago. In 1972, he was a Research Fellow in Reproductive Endocrinology at the University of Washington. Dr. Mattox has been a faculty member of the Universities of Nebraska, New Mexico, and Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Presently he is Chair and Residency Program Director, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, in Phoenix, and Professor of Clinical Obstetrics, Gynecology and Prevention Medicine at the University of Arizona. He is also an Adjunct Professor in Zoology at Arizona State University. Dr. Mattox is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

He has given more than 200 regional, national and international presentations. His current research interests are in Positive Emission Tomography (PET), the menstrual cycle, and the mood changes associated with the diseases found in female reproductive medicine.

Dr. Mattox is an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a former member of the Residency Review Committee for obstetrics and gynecology. He holds membership in the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, the Society of Reproductive Surgeons, the Society of Reproductive Endocrinologists, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
